Bulgaria has no political leaders calling for the country to leave the European Union, President Rosen Plevneliev has said.

In an interview with French TV station France 24, cited by BGNES wire service, the Bulgarian head of state has described the outcome of the June 23 referendum in Britain as a warning sign for Europeans not to succumb to the influence of "nationalists and populists".

Only together can European countries overcome the numerous challenges today, Plevneliev has opined.

His comments follow calls from Volen Siderov, the leader of nationalist Ataka party, for a UK-style referendum to be held in Bulgaria as well.

Plevneliev has made clear that the Bulgarian government is determined to defend the rights of its nationals working in Britain and of other EU nationals based there in accordance with the right to free movement.

"We should remain close friends and partners with London," the President is quoted as saying.

He has urged an end to uncertainty in EU-UK relations in the aftermath of the referendum, arguing it could result in decreased trust of "citizens, investors, businesses."

Plevneliev has also downplayed the idea that Britain would win "more efficiency and sustainability" as a result of its move to leave the EU.

"It will be during the EU-Britain talks that the consequences of nationalism and populism that led to the referendum result will be made clear."
