Bulgaria will support visa-free travel in the EU for Ukrainian citizens because Ukraine has met the requirements set by the European Commission, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has said at a meeting with Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko in Sofia.

Petro Poroshenko is paying an official visit to Bulgaria on Thursday.

Borisov expressed support for Ukraine’s political association with the EU and its economic integration into the bloc and said that Bulgaria was ready to offer expert advice to assist the building of closer links between Ukraine and the EU, the government in Sofia said in a statement after Borisov’s meeting with Poroshenko.

With regard to the crisis in Ukraine, Borisov spoke of the need for full implementation of the Minsk peace arrangements to normalise the political situation in Ukraine and to restore trade and economic relations, both between Bulgaria and Ukraine as well as between the EU and Russia.

The economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the EU over the annexation of Crimea and the reciprocal sanctions introduced in response by Moscow, as well as the crisis in Ukraine have adversely affected the business contacts between Bulgaria and Ukraine, leading to a considerable decline in bilateral trade in recent years, Borisov said, according to the statement.
