Turkey Has Not Yet Confirmed Suspension of Readmission Agreement with Bulgaria

Bulgarian Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova said on Friday that Turkey has not yet officially confirmed whether it has suspended the migrant readmission agreement with Bulgaria.

Bachvarova said that the Bulgarian ambassador to Turkey, Her Excellency Nadezhda Neynsky, had a meeting with her Turkish colleagues on Thursday, but Ankara still has not made an official statement regarding the state of the readmission agreement.

Last week, reports emerged that Turkey had unilaterally suspended the readmission agreement with Bulgaria, but this claim has not been officially confirmed yet and has even been dismissed by the Turkish embassy in Sofia.

It was speculated that Ankara had suspended the agreement in retaliation to Bulgaria's refusal to participate in the establishment of a joint trilateral flotilla with Romania and Turkey in the Black Sea.

Later, it emerged that Bulgaria had never made commitments to participate in such or any other regional initiatives in the Black Sea and has been consistently opposed from the start.
