The Leave campaign appears to have gained the upper hand outside London in the UK's EU referendum on Thursday, according to the BBC.

“At 04:45 BST Leave were ahead by more than 860,000 votes across the UK, with the English shires and Wales voting strongly for Brexit,” the BBC reported on Friday.

Remain appeared to be in the lead in Scotland and Northern Ireland. London has voted strongly for Remain.

With all council areas declared in Wales, about 52.5% of the voters have supported Leave, while 47.5% have opted to remain in the EU.

With 171 of the 382 counting areas in the UK declared as of early Friday morning, the Leave vote was ahead on 51.3%, with the Remain campaign behind on 48.7%, according to Reuters.

Voter turnout in England was 73%, 72% in Wales and 67% in Scotland, the BBC said. Registered voters were about 46.5 million.
