Mandate of EU's Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo Renewed for Two More Years

The mandate of the EU's rule of law mission in Kosovo (EULEX) has been extended for another two years until 14 June 2018.

This comes after the decision of the Council of the EU to extend the mandate and exchange of letters between the President of Kosovo Hashim Thaci and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.

Working in close partnership with the authorities of Kosovo, the mission will continue the gradual transfer of its activities to local institutions and other EU actors.

EULEX will assist the judicial and law enforcement authorities of Kosovo in their progress towards sustainability and accountability, contributing to the further development and strengthening of independent multi-ethnic justice, police and customs authorities.

The mission will aim to ensure these institutions are free from political interference and are compatible with internationally recognised standards and European best practices.

EULEX will also work in close cooperation with the EU Special Representative (EUSR) in Kosovo to assist in the implementation of the Belgrade-Prishtina dialogue facilitated by the EU.

The mission was launched in 2008 with the aim to assist and support Kosovo on its path to greater European integration in the rule of law area, with particular focus on police, judiciary and customs.
