More than 80% of Bulgarians support the need of nature conservation at the pristine areas of the country’s Black Sea coast irrespective of their political views, a news survey has shown.

Bulgarians accept almost automatically any ideas for the protection of the Black Sea coast and nature in general, the Sofia-based arm of Gallup International Asociation said in a statement on Monday, commenting on the results of its survey conducted from 13 to 19 May 2016 among 819 adult Bulgarians.

“People with higher education and income show naturally more sensitivity on the subject. Beyond that, no significant differences in opinion among different groups in the survey are observed, nor according to party affiliation,” according to the pollster.

Eight-five percent of the respondents agree that various special measures are needed to ensure the preservation of the decreasing number of undeveloped areas along the Black Sea coast famous for their natural beauty.

Eighty-one percent on average think that a complete ban is needed on property developments in the one-kilometer strip behind the beach line in places where no construction activities have started yet. In the group of respondents with higher education the share of those supporting this view exceeds 90%, Gallup International said.

A ban on free camping on Black Sea beaches has been a hot topic in recent years in Bulgaria. While 29% say that this type of holiday making should be banned altogether to preserve nature, 40% are of the opposite opinion, with young people with higher education more widely opposed than other groups.
