At Least Eleven Children Die in Storm in Russian Lake

At least eleven children and an adult have died after their boat was caught in a strong storm in Syamozero lake in the northwestern Russian region of Karelia on Sunday.

The tourist group from Moscow, which consisted mostly of children aged between twelve and fifteen years, was on a boat trip with two boats and a raft in the lake when the boats capsized during the storm.

According to media reports, 36 people from the group, which consisted of 49, have been rescued and the search continues for the rest. Two children remain missing according to TASS news agency.

Most of the survivors are in safety on an island in the lake and eleven other have been taken to a nearby village. The fate of four remains unknown.

Authorities have launched criminal investigation and a boating instructor has been detained. A warning for the storm had been issued in the region.
