NATO Members Bulgaria, Romania Discuss Defence Cooperation

Defence cooperation between Bulgaria and Romania, issues of NATO agenda and the preparation for the Alliance summit were in the focus of Tuesday’s meeting of the defence ministers of the two countries in Brussels.

Bulgaria’s Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev and his Romanian counterpart Mihnea Motoc shared concerns about security in the Black Sea region, the Defence Ministry in Sofia said in a statement.

Nikolay Nenchev and Mihnea Motoc also praised the efforts to create a multinational divisional headquarters for the southeastern flank of NATO and discussed the initiative to form a multinational brigade within NATO with Romania as a framework state, according to the statement.

The Bulgarian defence minister will meet his Greek counterpart Panos Kammenos later on Tuesday to discuss issues on NATO agenda and the joint efforts of the two countries to enhance border security and tackle irregular migration.

The defence ministers of NATO member states are meeting in Brussels on Tuesday and Wednesday in preparation for the forthcoming NATO summit in Warsaw in July.
