Bulgarian MEP Reelected as Deputy Head of European Federalists

Andrey Kovatchev, a Bulgarian MEP, has been reelected as the deputy chairman of the Union of European Federalists (UEF), his EPP party's press office has said.

Kovatchev has thus maintained his position at a non-governmental body compaigning for closer political integration of Europe that would finally lead to a federal structure.

The news was announced following the 25th Congress of the UEF held in Strasbourg.

MEP Elmar Brok, who chairs the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs, was reelected to the Chairman's office.

"The revival of ghosts from the past - nationalism, populism, endanger the achievements of a few decades of European integration," Kovatchev is quoted as saying.

He adds that the UEF's duty is to help build a Europe based to a larger extent on solidarity at a time many citizens take peace guaranteed by Europe for granted.
