Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva said on Sunday that she would not run for president in the forthcoming elections and will back the nomination of a candidate put forward by the right-wing Reformist Bloc.

“For me, this is not an option; I’ll continue my efforts as Minister of Education and Science, so let me be absolutely clear in this respect.” Kuneva, leader of Bulgaria of Citizens Movement, one of the five parties in the Reformist Bloc coalition, told public radio broadcaster BNR.

“I’ll support the candidate of the Reformist Bloc as strongly as I can.”

She added that the Reformist Bloc would come up with a single, strong nomination for president.

The RB are the junior partner in the minority coalition government dominated by centre-right GERB party of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

“This is the decision we took. At present, I see no serious reasons to hesitate about implementing that decision or think that we’ll be unable to implement it,” Kuneva said.

Bulgaria of Citizens Movement has proposed to hold consultations about nominating a candidate of the bloc for presidential elections by the end of July.

Bulgaria will hold presidential elections in the autumn.

Incumbent President Rosen Plevneliev has said he won’t seek a second five-year term of office. GERB party said earlier that they had decided on their candidate for president but disclosed no name.
