The Specialized Court of Appeals is to rule Tuesday on whether Tsenko Chokov, the mayor of Bulgaria's Galiche, should be held in custody.

The ruling will come after one by a lower-instance court, the Specialized Criminal Court, that the controversial mayor is to remain in detention.

Chokov was arrested along with several others on May 26. He is facing chargers of running an organized criminal gang and of actual bodily harm.

His son, Martin Chokov, has also been indicted on charges of hooliganism.

The mayor has been a divisive figure in Galiche, with some defending his record during the five terms he has served in office and other saying they have been systematically subjected to "terror", with Chokov allegedly abusing his power.
