A former TV host could become the mayor of Romania's capital Bucharest following a local vote held across the country on Sunday.

Gabriela Firea could become the first female mayor of the city, backed by the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which is currently the largest party in Parliament, after garnering over 40% of the vote in the first round.

She has vowed to improve conditions at schools and hospitals, help create more green spaces and reduce pollution, and deal with Bucharest's traffic jams.

Marked by a historically low turnout (around a third of voters, according to Romania Insider), the Bucharest election came after the office had remained vacant since September.

Then incumbent Sorin Oprescu was detained on corruption and bribery charges, with a deputy mayor taking over ad interim.
