More Than 1100 Applied for Protection in Bulgaria in April

As many as 1103 people from 17 countries sought protection in April, the State Agency for Refugees (DAB) has said.

Statistics published on DAB's website show the agency granted status to 74 people over that period.

Fourty of the decisions were for granting humanitarian status (with applicants coming from "four countries", while 34 people from 2 countries were given refugee status.

As many as 25 people from six countries were denied status, an inquiry on the agency's website shows.

DAB also says a total of 5305 people sought protection between January and April of this year. Within the same period, 198 decisions were taken to grant refugee status, while humanitarian status was given to 142 people. As many as 137 refugee applications were rejected.

From January to April, the number of Iraqis (2159) and Afghans (2156) outweighed that of Syrians (606) applying for status. Next were Pakistan (236) and Iran (33).

The total number of decisions for the four-month period is 3888, while terminated proceedings (with applicants having left the country) amounted to 3411.
