Election Rules: Parliament Committee Backs Presidential Veto

Lawmakers in Bulgaria's Legal Affairs Committee support the move by President Rosen Plevneliev to return parts of the amended Election Code to Parliament for consideration, the committee head has said.

A report prepared by the group of lawmakers for Parliament's plenary recommends against supporting the text returned and reads there was a "no" vote during the discussions, Focus News Agency quotes Danail Kirilov, an MP from the biggest party GERB who chairs the committee, as saying after a meeting.

Further on, a meeting of parties in the government coalition is due later on Tuesday to discuss the veto which Plevneliev imposed on a provision in the new Electoral Code version which sets caps on the number of polling station abroad.

Earlier in May, the President said it discriminated against some of the Bulgarian citizens residing in other countries.

The veto is yet to be subjected to a vote by full Parliament.

Valeri Simeonov, leader of the Patriotic Front faction in Parliament, says the caps on opening polling stations abroad will help curb the leverage of vote from Turkey, where tens of thousands of ballots are cast for the predominantly ethnic Turk party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) in Bulgarian general elections.
