Life Expectancy at Birth Drops in Bulgaria in 2013-2015 vs 2012-2014

Life expectancy at birth of Bulgaria’s population calculated for the period 2013 - 2015 was 74.5 years, 0.2 years lower than it had been for the period 2012 – 2014, the country’s stistical office NSI announced on Friday.

Males had lower life expectancy at birth (71.1 years) than females (78.0 years).

Life expectancy at birth indicates the average expected duration of the life of a newborn under the hypothesis of a constant intensity of age- specific mortality for the respective year.

Urban population had higher life expectancy at birth (75.3 years) for the period 2013 - 2015, compated with rural population (72.6 years). Compared with 2005, an increase of 2 years and 4 months was registered for urban population while for rural population the indicator remained inchanged.

Average life expectancy at age 65 was 16 years for the period 2013 – 2015, with men expected to live 14.1 more years and women 17.5 years.

The NSI said that average life expectancy at age 65 had increased by 1.4 years between 2005 and 2015 – by one year for men and one year and two months for women.

Bulgaria is among the EU countries with the lowest life expectancy at birth, the NSI recalled. Of the other 27 EU member states, only Latviaand Lithuania had lower life expectancy, 74.5 and 74.7 years respectively.

Spain (83.3 years) and Italy (83.2 years) had the highest life expectancy at birth among EU Member States.
