Residents of the Bulgarian village of Garmen renewed on Wednesday their protest against illegal dwellings in the Roma neighbourhood.

People, who are calling on Roma to leave the illegal houses and are discontent with the inactivity of the municipality, will also stage a protest on Thursday.

Last year, protesters demanded the demolition of the illegal buildings. Following several days of protests, ten houses were demolished, but the demolition was stopped and more than a hundred illegal buildings are still standing.

A signal has been submitted recently calling on authorities to inspect whether any new illegal houses have been built.

The mayor of Garmen, Minka Kapitanova, said that no illegal construction had taken place in the past year.

The residents of Garmen are planning to stage a large-scale protest on May 23 to mark the first anniversary of the clash between Bulgarian and Roma.

Last year's protests erupted after a scandal over loud music had resulted in a mass fight between Bulgarian and Roma residents.
