Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Labour Minister Ivaylo Kalfin has resigned.

Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has accepted Kalfin’s resignation, the government prtess service announced on Tuesday.

The resignation of the deputy prime minister in charge of demographic and social policy came just hours after Kalfin’s left-wing Alternative for Bulgarian Revival (ABV) party said it was withdrawing its support for Borisov’s government.

Kalfin was the sole minister from ABV in the minority coalition cabinet composed of Borisov’s centre-right GERB party and the right-wing Reformist Bloc.

GERB and the Reformist Bloc, which hold 106 seats among themselves, rely on support in Parliament from the Patriotic Front, a coalition of nationalist parties, which controls 18 seats but has no cabinet minister.

Last month, Kalfin made clear that ABV would exit the government if changes to the Electoral Code were adopted in violation of an agreement between GERB and ABV that had laid the basis for the formation of the coalition cabinet in November 2014.
