Bulgaria’s consumer confidence index increased by 1.8 percentage points in April compared to its level in January, official statistics showed on Tuesday.

The increase was 1.6 percentage points among urban population and 2.0 percentage points among rural population, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said in a quarterly survey of consumer confidence.

Consumers’ assessments point to improvement in the financial position of their households over the last 12 months, according to the survey which is representative for people aged 16+.

Urban population expects the improvement to continue over the next 12 months. Rural population, however, was more pessimistic last month than it had been three months earlier.

Consumers’ opinions about the evolution of the domestic economic environment over the last 12 months as well as their expectations about the next 12 months have slightly worsened compared to the January survey, the NSI said.

The assessments of changes in consumer prices over the last 12 months were more unfavourable last month compared with the opinions voiced three months earlier. Inflation expectations for the next 12 months, however, were less intense.

In April, consumers expected Bulgaria’s unemployment rate to remain unchanged or fall slightly.

The April survey also indicated that more consumers planned to buy durable goods (a car or a home) and spend on home improvements’ over the next 12 months compared to January.
