Bulgaria and Romania, lying at the eastern border of both NATO and the EU, will become ‘increasingly involved’ in Europe’s migration crisis and the West’s standoff with Russia over Ukraine, Stratfor has forecast.

While Romania and Bulgaria, which joined NATO in 2004, will continue to accept the Alliance’s military buildup on its eastern flank, “Sofia will maintain its ties with Moscow” due to shared cultural and historical ties, Startfor said in an analysis published on Monday.

The refugee crisis will hamper the efforts of both Bulgaria and Romania to join the EU’s free-travel Schengen Area due to “growing nationalism and anti-Schengen sentiments in Europe”, according to Stratfor.
