A number of towns and cities throughout Bulgaria will mark the Day of Europe on Monday.

At the European Parliament and EU Commission's representative office in Sofia, actors, journalists, sportspeople and musicians will join the literary reading of stories about Europe.

The office will open its doors to school students from around Bulgaria, part of whom will be there to attend the award ceremony for an essay dedicated to Europe.

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev and the Ambassadors of the Netherlands and Slovakia, along with Bulgarian MEPs, will also take part in the festivities. Plevneliev is also to hand out the award for the best essay.

In Veliko Tarnovo, in Northern Bulgaria, a parade of flags will be held representing EU member states. A light and sound show dedicated to the city's history - the old capital of Bulgaria - will also take place in the evening.

A language festival will be held in a high school in the southern town of Smolyan.

Additionally, Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna - the three biggest Bulgarian cities - will also have one landmark building each lit in the colors of the EU flag in a light and sound show at 21:00 local time.
