For the first time a woman will head the Bulgarian penitentiary system.

This became fact after Gergana Georgieva was appointed as general director of the justice ministry's General Directorate Execution of Punishment.

Georgieva was appointed on the order of Justice Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva, the justice ministry informed on Thursday.

The new director was presented to the team of the directorate by Deputy Justice Minister Krasimira Filipova.

Among the priorities of the new general director are: improving the conditions at prisons, preventing the smuggling of forbidden items and narcotic substances, resocialisation and improving the access of former prisoners to the labour market.

Georgieva holds a degree in law and in the past five years she served in the administration of the Bulgarian Ombudsman, working in the directorate responsible for conducting checks at prisons.

The predecessor of Georgieva was awarded by Zaharieva in recognition of his achievements and will continue to work at the directorate, serving as deputy general director.
