Bulgaria’s Parliament has rejected a proposed cut in the duration of election campaigns to 21 days from 30 after the draft change to election rules stirred protests from voters and opposition politicians.

The proposal was made last week by the Legal Affairs Committee in Parliament as part of changes to the Electoral Code.

The head of the committee Danail Kirilov had explained that the cut was needed to avoid apathy among voters in the final week of campaigning but critics had said that the shorter time period would favour big political parties.

Parliament decided that the duration of election campaigns will remain unchanged at 30 days but each political party will have the right  to make its own campaign shorter at its own discretion, Focus Focus news agency reported on Tuesday.
