Incumbent Bulgarian Vice President Margarita Popova is considering the option of running for president in the forthcoming elections which are scheduled to take place in the autumn.

In an interview for private NOVA TV broadcasted on Sunday, Popova said that she has not yet firmly decided whether she will contest the elections, but it seems that she has been considering the option for some time.

Ever since their election in 2011, the relations between Popova and President Rosen Plevneliev have often been tense. In the past months, there seems to have been growing estrangement between the two.

On several occasions, the vice president has publicly distinguished herself from the stances expressed by Plevneliev.

At present Popova is on a visit to the USA for participation in the second forum of Bulgarian schools in the western hemisphere.

At the same time, Plevneliev is also on a visit to the USA where he took part in the signing ceremony of the Paris agreement on climate change on Friday.

The simultaneous absence of both the president and vice president from Bulgaria and their presence in the same foreign country have been identified by some diplomats as a goof.

According to Popova, this happens for the first time due to the coinciding dates of the two events.

Due to security measures, a president and vice president should never be abroad from the country at the same time.
