Bulgarian authorities have reportedly the director of the Fund for Treatment of Children Abroad, Pavel Aleksandrov, the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office has said.

The fund is under the authority of the health ministry and provides organisation and financial support for children, who require diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, that can not be performed in a timely manner or for which there are no conditions to be performed in Bulgaria.

At present officials of the interior ministry's General Directorate Combating Organised Crime (GDBOP) are inspecting documents in the institution.

The fund was scheduled to hold its regular meeting at 12.30 o'clock on Wednesday at which it was to review requests for the treatment of 43 sick children.

According to reports, Aleksandrov has been detained for 24 hours. Around ten other people from the management of the fund have also been arrested.

There is still no official information on the police operation, but it is believed that it is part of an investigation into suspected financial malpractices at the fund.

Among the suspected wrongdoings are malpractices concerning the accommodation and transportation of sick children and their families abroad.

Aleksandrov was dismissed in October 2013 by then Health Minister Tanya Andreeva due to recurrent violations at the fund. In August 2014, he was reinstated by caretaker Health Minister Miroslav Nenkov.
