A total of 110 foreign nationals needing international protection will be resettled in Bulgaria starting this year under the country’s EU commitments, the government decided on Wednesday.

The EU has adopted several decisions to distribute among its member states citizens of third countries in need of international protection in view of the worst migration crisis in Europe since World War Two.

Bulgaria has committed to taking in 20 foreign nationals in 2016 and a further 30 in 2017 under the conclusions of the meeting of  representatives of the governments of the Member States of 20 July 2015, the cabinet in Sofia said in a statement.

A further 40 people in need of international protection from third countries will have to be resettled in Bulgaria this year and next  under the EU-Turkey deal on migration struck on 18 March 2016.

Bulgaria will also have to take in a further 20 asylum seekers after the end of 2017 under the 2014-2020 resettlement programme of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund, according to the statement.
