Five explosions have taken place outside of a police station a village in southern Russia, TASS reported on Monday.

There were four attackers of the police station in the Novoselitsky district of Stavropol region, the Russian news agency quoted a local police source as saying.

According to the source, three of the attackers blew themselves up, while the fourth one was shot dead. It was not immediately clear what had caused the fifth explosion.

No casualties had been reported among police officers and local residents, according to preliminary data, TASS said.

The incident had all characteristics of a terrorist attack, TASS said.

The attackers have not been identified yet.

The press service of Russia’s Federal Security Service in Stavropol region has said that a decision was made “to conduct a counter-terrorist operation on the territory of Novoseletsky municipal district” under the control of the National Anti-Terrorism Committee.

The village where the attack took place is close to Russia’s turbulent and predominantly-Muslim North Caucasian Federal District, a region troubled by attacks against government offices and civilians.

The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said efforts were under way “to understand what was behind” the attack, according to AFP.

“Was this a terrorist threat or gangsters? Without knowing the circumstances it is hard to say,” AFP quoted peskov as telling reporters.
