Mohamed Abrini, chief suspect in last year's November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris, has admitted that he is the third suicide bomber who was meant to blow himself up at the airport in Brussels during the March 22 attacks in the Belgian capital.

Abrini, who was arrested in the Brussels suburb of Anderlecht on Friday, admitted that he is the man dressed in white and wearing a hat, who was caught on security cameras walking next to the two other suicide bombers at Zaventem airport.

Abrini did not blow himself up and fled the scene.

The twin bombings at the departure hall of the airport were followed by another explosion at Maelbeek metro station an hour later.

The three attacks claimed the lives of a total of 32 people and left more than 300 other injured.

The attacks in the Belgian capital came only several days after Salah Abdeslam, chief suspect in the Paris attacks, had been arrested in the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek.

Several other suspects in the Brussels attacks, including Osama K, were also detained in the Belgian capital on Friday.

Until his confession, Abrini has not been linked to the Brussels attacks, but only to those in Paris.

Abrini is believed to have been caught on security camera in a petrol station with Abdeslam two days before the attacks in Paris.

The multiple gun and bomb attacks targeted several locations in Paris and claimed the lives of 130 people and left hundreds other injured.

Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for both the attacks in the French and Belgian capitals.

Abrini also admitted that the group initially planned to carry out another attack in France, but they changed their plans and decided to hit Brussels after the arrest of Abdeslam.

Prosecutors said that Abrini's DNA and fingerprints were found in two “safe houses” in the Brussels suburb of Schaerbeek and in a car used during the Paris attacks.

Osama K, who has been identified by Belgian media as Swedish national Osama Krayem, is suspected of helping the suicide bomber at Maelbeek metro station and buying the sports bags used to conceal the bombs.
