Bulgaria Calls Tender for Electronic Road Tolling System

Bulgaria’s Road Infrastructure Agency has called a public tender for an electronic toll collection system that will replace the existing vignette stickers attached to the windshields, Dnevnik news daily has reported.

The candidates will be required to design, build and introduce an automated system for collecting road tolls on more than 16,000 km of roads and motorways, Dnevnik said, citing an announcement from the government agency on Wednesday.

Vehicles with gross weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes will pay toll pegged to the distance they travel on national roads, while vehicles with total weight below 3.5 tonnes will pay electronic vignettes for fixed periods of time from the date of purchase.

The electronic vignettes will replace the vignette stickers currently used to collect charges for the use of national roads. The change is expected to save costs by eliminating the need to print, store and distribute vignette stickers at petrol stations, post offices and other points of sale around the country. The introduction of electronic vignettes is also expected to eliminate the use of fake or stolen stickers, according to dnevnik.bg.

The introduction of a tolling system is expected to double or triple the revenues for the state generated currently from road charges, Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova said last month.
