Bulgaria to Switch to Daylight Saving Time Sunday, March 27

Bulgaria will move to summer time at 3 a.m. local standard time on Sunday, March 27.

Clocks are to be turned forward 1 hour to 4 a.m. local daylight time instead, which means there will be more light in the evenings.

Return to standard time in Bulgaria will take place on Sunday, October 30. Clocks will be turned backward 1 hour at 4 a.m. local daylight time to 3 a.m. local standard time, which means there will be more light in the mornings.

The change, called daylight saving, was introduced in Bulgaria in 1979.  

The rationale behind the switchover to summer time, also called “daylight saving time” (DST), is to save energy and make better use of daylight.

Thunder Bay in Ontario, Canada became the first location to use DST in 1908. Germany became the first country to introduce DST when clocks were turned forward 1 hour on April 30, 1916 to minimize the use of artificial lighting in order to save fuel for the war effort during World War I.
