Bulgaria's foreign ministry has advised citizens planning a trip to Belgium to postpone their journey in the wake of Tuesday's terrorist attacks in Brussels, which claimed the lives of at least 26 people and left scores of others injured.

Those already in Belgium are advised to regularly follow the official statements and instructions of the local authorities.

Citizens are advised to avoid visiting places of mass public gathering especially the large transport centers such as the underground and the airports in Brussels and other Belgian cities.

They are also to be vigilant and to pay extra attention when shopping in large department stores.

The ministry is recommending Bulgarian citizens planning short-term travel to Belgium to register on the website of the foreign ministry or to provide their contact details to the Bulgarian embassy in Brussels.

Following the attacks in Zaventem airport and Maelbeek metro station, Belgium has risen its terrorist alert to the highest fourth level.
