Salah Abdeslam, chief suspect in last year's November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris, had planned to blow himself up at Stade de France but changed his mind.
Abdeslam admitted this during interrogation by Belgian investigators on Saturday, a day after his detention in the Brussels neigbourhood of Molenbeek on Friday.
Also on Saturday, Belgian authorities charged Abdeslam, who had been on the run since the attacks, with participation in terrorist murder and the activities of a terrorist group.
The gun and bomb attacks, which occurred almost simultaneously at several locations across Paris, claimed the lives of 130 people and left hundreds others injured.
One of the sites targeted by terrorists was Stade de France where a friendly football match between France and Germany took place on the night of the attacks.
Investigators are hoping Abdeslam will reveal more details on the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, which claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Paris has requested Abdeslam's extradition to France, but the suspect is opposing it.
He is suspected in helping with logistics, including renting rooms and driving suicide bombers to the Stade de France.
He fled Paris shortly after the attacks and hid in Molenbeek, 500 metres away from his home.
He was arrested after his fingerprints had been found in a flat in another suburb of Brussels, Forest, which was raided earlier in the week.
Interpol has advised of extra vigilance at borders after the raid on Friday as more accomplices may attempt to flee Europe.
