Bulgarian police have cracked down on a criminal group dealing in production and distribution of counterfeit euro notes, the Ministry of the Interior announced on Thursday.

Police, acting jointly with customs officials and prosecutors, have thwarted an attempt to produce and distribute 50 million euro in fake banknotes, the ministry said in a statement.

Five people have been detained so far in the operation conducted in Bulgaria’s second biggest city of Plovdiv last night.

One of those arrested is a former officer of the anti-organised crime police directorate who had left service in 2004, while another one had been sentenced in Belgium on charges of falsification, according to the statement.

During the operation, police confiscated multiple counterfeit notes of 50 and 500 euro notes as well as holographic stickers enough to make about EUR 1.5 M worth of counterfeit notes.
