Bulgaria's tourism ministry will drop a proposed ban on camping on the entire territory of the country, which was featured in draft amendments to the Tourism Act.

This was announced by Bulgarian Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova at the beginning of a discussion on the proposed amendments to the Tourism Act held on Wednesday.

Angelkova said that the proposed ban on camping on the entire territory of the country will be dropped as it was not working.

In her words, the ministry was against total bans, clarifying that the total ban had been proposed as a draft for discussion rather than as a bill.

The minister made a commitment to extend the period of public discussion with three months.

Angelkova highlighted that it was important to achieve working and balanced solutions, which define camping and establish clear rules on its practice.

She added that interested parties will have ten days after the discussion in which to submit written proposals on the topic.

The minister assured that all proposals will be featured in a comparative table which will be visible on the website of the ministry. After that experts will devise a common frame which will be proposed for public discussion.

On Monday, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov in his capacity as leader of the largest ruling party ordered his fellow MPs to propose revocation of a controversial ban on beach camping.

The ban which prohibited camping at a distance of less than hundred meters away from the beach had been adopted by parliament on March 1.

The ban sparked protests, with people calling on President Rosen Plevneliev to veto the ban.

Plevneliev said that he will refer the proposed fines to the Constitutional Court as according to him these were unconstitutional.

On Wednesday, MPs from GERB submitted a proposal to drop the ban until approval of the changes to the Tourism Act explicitly regulate the conditions for camping outside designated areas.
