Bulgaria, EU Agree on Need for Joint Action to Tackle Migration Crisis

Bulgaria and the EU agree that the bloc needs to support member states lying on its external borders, including Bulgaria, to cope with the challenges of the migration crisis and prevent the shifting of migration flows, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia has said.

In a press release covering a discussion between Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini in Brussels on Monday the ministry noted that Mitov had once again presented Bulgaria’s position on the migration issue outlined last week by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov in a letter to European Council President Donald Tusk.

In the letter, Borisov tied the country’s support for a final EU-Turkey agreement on curbing the migrant inflow into Europe to the opportunity for Bulgaria to send irregular migrants back to Turkey. EU leaders are expected to finalize a deal with Ankara on curbing the migrant inflow into Europe at a summit in Brussels on March 17-18.

Federica Mogherini has said that as a country bordering Turkey, Bulgaria plays an important role in shaping up the EU’s common position and its opinion is being taken into account at every stage of the decision making process, according to the press release.

European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said earlier on Monday that the Commission had taken note of Bulgaria’s position. 

Daniel Mitov is in Brussels for the regular meeting of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council.
