ID Checks Taking Place at Sofia’s Central Railway, Bus Stations

Domestic | March 6, 2016, Sunday // 14:35|  views

There is heightened police presence in the area of the central railway and bus stations in the Bulgarian capital on Sunday, with authorities checking the identity documents and luggage of travelers.

Authorities are assuring that the heightened police presence is a preventive measure and is not in response to a concrete security threat.

The extra security measures are taken due to the gathering of many people at certain places during the long weekend which began with the celebration of the country’s national holiday (Liberation Day) on Thursday and is coming to an end on Sunday.

Checks are also being carried out by officers of transport police who are working on the station.

Most travelers are content with the checks as they are feeling safer, private bTV station informs.

A large-scale police operation, involving inspections conducted by the specialised anti-terrorism unit and extra security measures were also reported at key locations in Sofia on Friday.
