Slovakia PM Tipped to Retain Office in Saturday Election

Slovaks are voting for a new Parliament on Saturday, with social-democrat Robert Fico widely expected to remain in office as Prime Minister.

Some 4.4 million people are eligible to cast a ballot.

Many opinion polls have suggested the incumbent's Smer SD party is tipped to win, possibly garnering up to 38.4 percent of the vote, but also losing its majority in Parliament.

Saturday's elections are being held just several months before the country takes over the Council of the EU's rotational presidency on July 01.

The election campaign has been dominated by issues such as migration and Slovakia's opposition, along with the other Visegrad Four countries (Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic), to Germany's "open-door" policy toward migrants.

Local media earlier quoted Fico as calling multiculturalism "a fiction".

""We'll never bring even a single Muslim to Slovakia: we won't create any Muslim communities here because they pose a serious security risk," Deutsche Welle quotes him as telling a crowd during a rally in the capital Bratislava earlier this week.

Slovakia is not sitting on a migrant route, and only 330 people have applied for asylum last year.
