Large-scale police operation is taking place at key locations across the Bulgarian capital during the long weekend which began on Thursday with the celebration of the country’s national holiday (Liberation Day) and will last until Sunday.

Officers from the anti-terrorism unit made inspections in the area of the central railway station in Sofia, also checking the central bus station and the nearby underground station.

The specialized forces are checking the identity documents of citizens.

The citizens are content with the heightened police presence as they are feeling safer, private bTV station informs.

Specialised forces could be seen in the Mladost neighbourhood and at the European Union underground station in the centre of the capital on Thursday, private NOVA TV adds.

Earlier during the week, the interior ministry warned that there will be heightened police presence and additional security measures across the country in the days around the national holiday to ensure the safety of citizens.

The interior ministry apologised for any inconveniences arising from the additional security measures.
