The Specialized Criminal Court has released six tax officers from the northern Bulgarian city of Veliko Tarnovo on bail after they were detained on charges of administrative abuse and bribery.

The sums paid range between BGN 20 000 (EUR 10 000) for a former head of the Veliko Tarnovo branch of the National Revenue Agency (NRA) and five to fifteen thousand for each of the rest.

Stefan Stefanov previously headed the NRA's local branch, while all the other five were in charge of departments within the unit.

All six have been dismissed and barred from leaving the country, the Bulgarian National Radio reports.

Earlier this week, an operation jointly conducted by counter-intelligence and domestic security agency DANS and the Interior Ministry resulted in the detention of nine tax officials, three of them later being released without any charges pressed on them.
