A fire burst out in Kalimok Brashlen protected area in the Bulgarian northeastern town of Tutrakan, the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) announced on Tuesday, citing the Ministry of Interior.

Since Monday afternoon, firefighters have been trying to extinguish the fire with no significant results because of the inaccessibility of the area.

This is the second fire in the region in two weeks. According to firefighters, the blaze was intentionally started.

The ignition has caused damages to approximately 3,000 hectares of wetland vegetation.

Kalimok Brashlen protected site was established in 2001 in order to preserve one of the few remaining Danube wetlands and its unique biodiversity at a national and European level.
