Fifty-eight percent of Germans favour the reinstating of controls at EU’s internal borders to stop the migration of refugees and asylum seekers, a new poll commissioned by public broadcaster ZDF showed on Friday.

Those supporting reintroducing of border controls say they want the measure to take effect even if it will have a negative impact on tourism and economy.

The ZDF Politbarometer poll showed that 39% of Germans opposed the return of border checks across the EU’s Schengen passport-free travel zone.

A previous ZDF poll last month found that 50% of Germans supported reinstating border controls, while 46% expressed concerns over the negative impact on the country’s economy.

The latest poll has also found that 54% of  respondents see little chance of refugees successfully integrating into German society.

Germany took in more than one million migrants and refugees last year.
