Bulgaria expects that the European Union will act in a timely manner to resolve a worsening crisis at the country's border crossings with Greece caused by their blockade by Greek farmers, Bulgarian Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva has said.

In a letter sent to European Parliament President Martin Schulz, European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker President on Friday Tsacheva informed them about the declaration adopted by the Bulgarian Parliament earlier during the day and expressed hope that the European institutions would take action to protect not only the interests of Bulgarian road carriers but also the EU's fundamental right to free movement of goods and people.

Defending these values, solidarity, and good neighbourly relations between EU member states in the current difficult and challenging times for the EU is of key importance for the stability, public trust in institutions, and success of our common policies, Tsetska Tsacheva said in her letter to the three top EU officials, according to a statement posted on the website of the Bulgarian National Assembly.

”The Bulgarian Parliament Speaker expects beneficial interaction for resolving this problem, which has had extremely negative consequences for the Bulgarian economy and Bulgarian road cariers in particular,” the statement read.
