Top EU officials and the leaders of four countries lying on the so-called Western Balkans migrant route have discussed the migration crisis in Europe ahead of Thursday’s European Council Summit, the Commission said,

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council President Tusk hosted a dinner with the leaders of, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia in Brussels on Wednesday evening, the Commission said in a statement.

“Participants underlined the need to avoid a humanitarian crisis developing in the Western Balkans, and discussed the need to avoid unilateral measures”.

Juncker reminded participants of the agreement reached by the Leaders of the Western Balkan countries at their meeting in October, when they decided to improve cooperation and step up consultation between their countries to help resolve the migration crisis.

The European Council has already agreed on measures to deal with the refugee crisis, including redistribution and relocation, Juncker recalled on Thursday morning, ahead of the summit.

"Member States must make good on what they agreed", Juncker said, according to the statement.
