Juncker Confirms Romania Could Be Decoupled from Bulgaria in EU Monitoring

EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has told Romania's PM that Brussels might end monitoring on Romania if the country continues to mark the progress it has been showing over the past years.

The development would virtually mean that Bulgaria would remain under EU supervision, with annual reports prepared to evaluate the prograss of its reforms in the judiciary, anti-corruption measures and effort to combat organized crime.

Bulgaria and Romania agreed to have the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) implemented on them upon their entry into the EU in 2007.

But Juncker has told Dacian Ciolos there is no "intimate relation" between the frameworks of Bulgaria and Romania at the moment.

A number of Bulgarian politicians have been warning of the risk for Romania to be decoupled from Bulgaria if the gap between the two respective countries' progress continues to grow.
