Bulgaria's Parliament has adopted on second reading legal changes allowing counter-intelligence and domestic security agency DANS to process passengers' reservation data in the country.

Under the amendments, which were first put forward by the government in September, a special unit in charge of handling the data, in compliance with a EU directive and the Europol Regulation.

Bulgaria's State Agency for National Security (DANS) will thus be able to process flight reservation data for the purposes of prevention, detection, investigation, and criminal persecution of serious offenses and in compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act.

Data that will be subject to scrutiny by DANS includes date of reservation and issuance of tickets; names and birth date of the passenger; planned flight dates; address and contact details; information on whether the passenger travels frequently by plane; information on luggage.

Airlines that do not comply with the new rules will be facing a fine ranging between BGN 3000 and 10 000.
