The United Nations Security Council on Sunday condemned the launch of a long-range rocket by North Korea.

It stopped short of new sanctions but assured it would introduce them soon, after Pyongyang launched a long-range rocket that took a satellite into orbit around the Earth.

The meeting was demanded by the United States, Japan and South Korea, amid concerns that satellite launch might be a disguised test of ballistic missile technology.

This is the second North Korean action in as many months this year that many international critics of the regime say might be tantamount to a nuclear test.

Pyongyang said in January it had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb.

The UN Security Council called the rocket launch as "a serious violation" of UN resolutions.
