The United States, Japan and South Korea have requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council following Sunday’s launch of a long-range rocket by North Korea, Fox News has reported.

The security council session is likely to start at 11 a.m. New York time (6 p.m. Sofia time) on Sunday.

North Korea announced earlier on Sunday that it launched a long-range rocket that took a satellite into orbit around the Earth.

The launch, which defied Security Council resolutions that ban North Korea from using ballistic missile technology, came as the Security Council debates a resolution condemning Pyongyang North Korea for last month’s nuclear test.

The United States and South Korea have condemned the launch as a disguised ballistic missile test conducted in defiance of Security Council resolutions.

China’s Foreign Ministry expressed regret that North Korea had carried out the launch despite widespread opposition.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the rocket launch “once again demonstrated the provocative neglect of the norms of the international law".
