The English translation of The Physics of Sorrow, a novel by Bulgarian author Georgi Gospodinov, has been shortlisted for the finals of the 2016 PEN Translation Prize.

Angela Rodel is the translator.

Rodel’s translation will compete with the titles The Complete Stories by Clarice Lispector, translated from the Portuguese by Katrina Dodson; The Blizzard by Vladimir Sorokin, translated from the Russian by Jamey Gambrell; Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment, translated by Oliver Ready, and Hollow Heart by Viola Di Grado, translated from the Italian by Antony Shugaar.

The PEN American Center awards separate prizes to works in translation published in poetry or prose the previous year.

Founded in New York City in 1992, the PEN Translation Prize has been awarded yearly for outstanding translation achievements during the previous year. The annual awards of the PEN American Center are considered to be the most prestigious literary honours in the United States.

This year's awards will confer over $200,000 to some of the best writers and translators published in 2015.

The winners will be announced on March 1. The awards ceremony will take place on April 11, at the New School in NYC.
