A protest rally briefly blocked motor traffic in central Sofia on Thursday afternoon.

The protesters demanded the resignation of Bulgaria’s government and chief prosecutor, dissolution of parliament and overhaul of the political and judicial system in the country.

An estimated 300 protesters gathered in front of Parliament building which has been cordoned off by police. The figure was a tenth of the expected turnout announced through social media networks by the organizers.

The protesters chanted “Resignation” and “Mafia” and unfurled banners reading “NATO, get out of Bulgaria”, “Stop the occupation”, “The future belongs to sovereign states”, among others.

Ambulance cars, gendarmerie vans and fire engines were seen parked nearby.

Some protesters threw snowballs at the building but otherwise the protest action was peaceful.

Police detained 16 people before and during the rally who had no identity documents with them or carried batons or knives, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. It said earlier on Thursday that 10 people had been detained prior to the rally

On Wednesday, the Interior Ministry warned that it had been tipped about possible "acts of provocation" at the rally aimed at creating unrest.
