Trips of Bulgarians Abroad Increased by 15.4 % Y/Y in December 2015

In December 2015, Bulgarians completed 309 010 trips abroad, which represented an increase of 15.4 % compared to the same month in 2014.

This is seen by the latest figures of the National Statistical Institute (NSI) released on Wednesday.

There was increase in the number of trips to Italy, Macedonia, Spain, Romania, Austria, Germany, Turkey, Greece and Serbia, while a drop was registered in the number of visits to Russia, France, the UK and Poland.

Travel for other purposes (visiting friends and relatives, education, visiting cultural and sports events) constituted the largest relative share of Bulgarian trips abroad, followed by business trips and holiday travel and excursions.

Compared to December 2014, increases were registered in all three types of trips.

In December, trips for other purposes accounted for 76.1 % of all trips to Romania and 65.3 % of all trips to Turkey.

Business trips to Poland represented 68.7 % of all trips to the country, while holiday travel and excursions accounted for 37.1 % of all trips to Macedonia.

Foreigners completed 441 261 trips to Bulgaria in December, which represented an increase of 2.6 % compared to the same month in 2014.

There was an increase in the number of holiday travel and excursions and business trips, while trips for other purposes registered a drop.

EU citizens accounted for 51.2 % of all foreigners visiting Bulgaria, which represented a decrease of 2.3 % compared to the same month in 2014.

There was a drop in the number of visitors from France, Poland, the UK, Germany, the Czech Republic, while there was an increase in the number of Austrian, Hungarian, Italian and Dutch visitors.

There was a 9.5 % rise in the number of visitors from other European countries, with Macedonians accounting for the largest increase.

In December, the trips for other purposes (including visiting relatives and transit journeys) constituted the largest number of trips followed by holiday travel and excursions and business trips.

Holiday travel and excursions accounted for 94.5 % of all trips made by Israeli citizens and 84.4 % of all visits of Macedonians.

Business trips constituted 68.2 % of all trips made by Spanish citizens and 52.8 % of all visits of Italians.

Trips for other purposes accounted for 79.3 % of all trips made by Romanians.
