Bulgaria Absorbed 85 % of EU Funds Available During 2007-2013 Period

Bulgaria absorbed 85 % of the EU funds available under the 2007-2013 programme period.

Bulgaria's absorption rate was below the average for the EU, which stood at 88.9 %, with the country ranking 22nd in this respect.

Greece had the highest absoprtion rate – 98.1 %, followed by Slovenia, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Latvia, Finland, Luxembourg and Portugal all with an absorption rate of 95 %.

Only six member states had lower absorption rate than Bulgaria – the Czech Republic, Spain, Malta, Italy, Romania and Croatia.

Croatia had the lowest absorption rate – 58.6 %, with the country having jointed the EU in July 2013.

As of 31 December 2015, Bulgarian beneficiaries were allocated more than EUR 10.7 B under the operational programmes, with the EU having reimbursed over EUR 7.9 B of the payments, while the remaining funds have been provided by the government budget.

The allocation of funding under the 2007-2013 period expired at the end of last year.
